The WSESD Assistant Superintendent of Special Education oversees all special education programs and services at West Shore ESD. This includes evaluating the supervisors of special education, working with the WSESD Assistant Superintendent of Business Services to manage the special education budget, providing information to the WSESD Board of Education and the Superintendent, and providing updates to the superintendents and principals of Lake, Mason, and Oceana school districts. The Assistant Superintendent of Special Education is required to have a master's degree or higher, approval in at least one area of special education, at least three years of experience in the field of special education, and must have graduated from an approved university program in special education administrative directorship.

The WSESD Planner/Monitor is knowledgeable about the state and federal special education rules and regulations and helps guide schools in Lake, Mason, and Oceana counties to follow those laws. The Planner/Monitor aids in the development of the WSESD Special Education Plan and helps superintendents and principals study their special education data from the State of Michigan. A Planner/Monitor helps schools and parents locate mediation services when there is a disagreement about special education services, and works with the Michigan Department of Education to investigate special education-related complaints. The Planner/Monitor at West Shore ESD also is called the Assistant Director of Special Education.

Supervisors of special education at the WSESD supervise and evaluate the professional and support staff. Some oversee the WSESD special education teachers and paraprofessionals (classroom and bus aides), while others supervise the school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, school social workers, teacher consultants, occupational therapists, certified occupational therapist assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistant. Early On also falls under the supervision of the special education supervisor. Supervisors provide professional development and guidance to special education teachers and principals within the local school districts of Lake, Mason, and Oceana counties. They are required to have a master's degree or higher, approval in at least one area of special education, at least three years of experience in the field of special education, and graduated from an approved university program in special education administrative supervision.
