Occupational therapy (OT) helps children develop important skills that support independence and participation in everyday activities. However, not all occupational therapy services serve the same purpose.
While both school-based and outpatient OT aim to help children develop independence and improve their quality of life, their goals, settings, and approaches can look a little different.
What Is School-Based Occupational Therapy?
School-based occupational therapy focuses on helping students access and participate in their educational environment.
School-based occupational therapists work closely with teachers, families, and school staff to provide strategies and support that help students participate in classroom activities, learning opportunities, and daily school routines.
Key aspects of school-based OT include:
Eligibility: Determined by a student's educational needs and ability to access and participate in the classroom and curriculum.
Focus: Supporting participation in school-related tasks, such as completing written work, using classroom tools, and transitioning throughout the school environment.
Setting: Services are provided at school or through a school-based program.
The primary goal of school-based OT is to help students participate more fully in learning and school life.
What Is Outpatient Occupational Therapy?
Outpatient occupational therapy focuses on helping children develop skills that support their health, development, and independence in everyday life.
These services address challenges children may experience with daily activities at home or in the community.
Key aspects of outpatient OT include:
Eligibility: Based on a child's difficulties with everyday activities at home or in the community.
Focus: Developing fine motor, sensory, and self-care skills that support daily activities.
Setting: Services are typically provided in a clinic.
Outpatient OT helps children build skills that support greater independence and participation in activities outside the classroom.
Different Approaches, Shared Goals
Although school-based and outpatient occupational therapy have different areas of focus, both play important roles in supporting children's growth, independence, and overall quality of life.
A child may benefit from one or both types of occupational therapy depending on their individual needs.

At West Shore ESD, our school-based occupational therapists collaborate with local school districts, teachers, families, students, and staff to provide strategies and support that help students access educational opportunities and participate in school life.
Understanding the differences between school-based and outpatient OT can help families make informed decisions about the services their child may need to succeed both in and out of school.
Every Learner. Every Path. Every Future.
